Quick answers to the questions Anchorage homeowners ask most.
It depends on what's wrong and how the line is fixed — a single broken section is at the low end, while a full replacement of a long, deep, or hard-to-reach line costs more. Method matters too: trenchless lining or bursting versus an open trench. The honest way to a real number is a free estimate after a camera inspection shows the line's actual condition.
Common ones are repeated main-line backups, several fixtures backing up or gurgling at once (especially the lowest drains), a sewage smell, slow drains throughout the house, and a wet, unusually green, or sunken patch in the yard over the line. Older clay, cast-iron, or Orangeburg pipe is more prone to these problems.
Trenchless (pipe lining or bursting) fixes many lines with little or no digging and far less yard damage. But a fully collapsed pipe, a bad belly that needs re-grading, or certain access and depth conditions can still require an open-trench replacement. A camera inspection is what tells us honestly which one fits.
If only one section has failed, a spot repair is often the right, lowest-cost fix. If the line is breaking down along its length, has a bad sag, or is old failing pipe, lining or replacement usually lasts longer. We base the recommendation on what the camera shows, not on selling the bigger job.
Roots get into a sewer line through a crack or a loose joint, so cabling them out clears the line but they grow back. The lasting fix is to repair or line the section the roots are entering, so there's no longer a gap for them to get in. A camera shows where they're entering and how much damage there is.
For sewer work, almost always — it's how you avoid digging in the wrong place. It's especially worth it when a line keeps backing up, before paying for a repair or replacement, or when buying a home and checking the sewer line's condition before closing.
