Quick answers to the questions Anchorage homeowners ask most.
Most stumps are ground about 4–8 inches below grade — enough to plant grass or lay sod over the spot. If you're replanting a tree or building on it, we can grind deeper or recommend full removal.
Grinding chews the stump into chips below the soil line and leaves the deep roots to decompose — fast, clean, and minimal damage to the lawn. Removal digs out the stump and major roots, leaving a large hole; it's more invasive and usually only needed before building or paving.
The grindings can be raked back into the hole as mulch or hauled away, whichever you prefer. They make good mulch for beds, though fresh chips are best kept away from the bases of living plants.
The stump itself won't regrow once it's ground out. A few species can send up shoots from roots left in the ground; those are easy to mow or treat, and surface root grinding or full removal can address stubborn roots.
Most single stumps are done in under an hour. Time depends on the diameter, the type of wood, and how easily the machine can reach the stump — tight gates and backyard access add time.
Cost depends mostly on stump diameter, how many you have, the access, and whether you want the grindings hauled away. The quickest way to a real number is a free estimate — tell us about your stumps.
