Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It's invisible and odorless and can build up indoors. The EPA and U.S. Surgeon General identify radon as a leading cause of lung cancer, which is why testing and, where needed, mitigation are recommended.
The EPA recommends taking action to lower radon at 4.0 pCi/L or above, and considering action between 2.0 and 4.0 pCi/L. No level is considered completely risk-free, but 4.0 is the standard action point. A test of your own home is the only way to know your number.

The most common fix is active soil depressurization: a sealed vent pipe and a continuously running inline fan draw radon-laden soil gas from beneath the slab (or a crawl-space membrane) and discharge it outside above the roofline, before it can enter your living space.
