Why a vapor barrier comes first
Bare crawl space soil releases moisture into the air around the clock. A vapor barrier is a heavy poly liner laid across that soil and run up the walls, with overlapped, sealed seams, so the dampness is held under the liner instead of rising into the space. It's the base layer of a sealed crawl space — on its own it cuts ground moisture sharply, and it's what a full encapsulation and dehumidifier build on.
