A lasting asphalt driveway is mostly about what's underneath: the old surface removed or prepped, the ground graded for drainage, and a compacted aggregate base. Hot-mix asphalt is then laid at the right thickness and rolled to full density so it sheds water and resists the cracking that comes from a weak base.
